Gwen Nielson is a gamer and she’s damn proud of it. Her mother may be a former beauty queen and her kid sister may participate in every pageant the state of Colorado has to offer, but Gwen is content to stay at home and play on her Xbox. To her, life isn’t about fashion and make-up; it’s about making a difference and keeping a low profile. And while most of the girls at her high school hang out at the local country club vying for the popular boys’ attention, Gwen is cool with having a boyfriend she’s never met. Pete is a fellow online gamer who lives in California. He’s funny and sweet, and his father owns a gaming company, which is an added bonus because Gwen gets to test out new games before they’re released to the public.

When Pete mails a new game for her to beta test, Gwen patiently awaits its arrival, but the package is never delivered. To make matters worse, when she calls to let Pete know, she discovers that he’s at the hospital after succumbing to a mysterious illness. Hours later, an ambulance arrives next door because her neighbor’s youngest son, Ben, suddenly becomes ill too. His parents and doctors aren’t sure why he has slipped into a coma, but when Gwen finds her opened package in Ben’s bedroom, she begins to suspect that the game is responsible for both of the boys’ eerily similar conditions.

Even to Gwen, the idea of a game making people sick sounds absurd, so she decides to test her theory before going to her parents. Unfortunately, her neighbor’s older brother, Ryan, insists on checking out the game with her. That’s when they discover that the disc isn’t a game at all—it’s actually a portal to a high-tech government simulator named Eve 2.0 who’s programmed to trap players until they can complete all of the timed objectives.

With her top-notched gaming skills, Gwen is a formidable opponent, but she quickly begins to realize that playing a game versus living it is a lot harder than she ever imagined. And as the objectives become more difficult and the four kids are forced to work as a team, Gwen concedes that she may not be as good as she needs to be, which just might end up costing her not only her own life, but Pete, Ryan, and Ben’s too.

Because of her love for all things literary, Winter pursued a Master of Arts degree in English Literature and Creative Writing. Professionally, she is a manuscript editor and, in her spare time, she enjoys hosting author spotlights, posting book reviews, and teaching creative writing workshops.

In her private time, she is an avid reader of science fiction, fantasy, and paranormal romances, and one day she hopes to inspire young readers in the same way her favorite authors continue to inspire her today.

Angela Smith is a Texas native who, years ago, was dubbed most likely to write a novel during her senior year in high school. She always had her nose stuck in a book, even hiding them behind her textbooks during school study time. Her dream began at a young age when her sister started reciting 'Brer Rabbit' after their mom read it to them so often. She told her mom she'd write a story one day and never gave up on that dream even though her mom was never able to see it come to fruition. By day, she works as a certified paralegal and office manager at her local District Attorney's office and spends her free time with her husband, their pets, and their many hobbies. Although life in general keeps her very busy, her passion for writing and getting the stories out of her head tends to make her restless if she isn't following what some people call her destiny.

It actually happened.

Hard to believe that two teenagers and a special child, torn from their comfortable and insulated Jewish community in wartime Romania, were taken in by Gypsies camped in the forest. How could they find their places among the flamboyant people, whose lifestyle and ways of confronting the hostile surrounding society were so different from that of the Jews?

This heart stirring story fleshes out this occurrence, presenting the dilemmas, enlightenments, emotional attachments, and mutual understandings experienced by the child protagonists.

I was born into a bourgeois family in Bukovina, a region of Romania, in a town named Gura Humorului. The first daughter of a young couple, and the first grandchild in the family. Endless happiness!

Endless happiness?

The sounds of war were approaching our area, and happiness turned into panic and fear of the unknown.
In October 1941, when I was just sixteen months old, a proclamation ordered all the Jews of the town, healthy, sick, Young and old, to gather at the train station and bring with them everything their hands could carry.

We were exiled to an area called Transnistria, where death awaited about sixty percent of those arriving. A slow death from starvation, cold, hunger and diseases. The only goal we had there was to survive.

After three years of suffering and losing our beloved, we returned to Romania and all we wanted was to get out of the country that did not remember its Jews, and their contribution to the economy, growth, and culture.

One evening, ten years ago, I suddenly realized I had to write down all the tragic events that happened, and all the unbelievable miracles that took place and saved me and my family’s life.

I had to write it down before our generation of survivors would disappear, and things would be forgotten.

The Dog: Injured & Abandoned

Based on true events, this story takes place in the late 1950s. A young girl’s love for running propelled her to join the school cross country team. With only boys on the team, she faced bullying and ridicule. Finding an injured, abandoned dog proved to be her salvation. Together, the girl and the dog set out to face this daunting challenge.

A STORY OF COURAGE, STRENGTH, AND SPIRIT.

Dedicated to every Child that has ever been Bullied.

About the Author

I wrote this story “If I Could Run” to tell my experience of being bullied when I was a Sophomore/Junior in high school in 1958/59. It was such a humiliating, depressing and agonizing time in my life. I can remember it so clearly 60 years later. Bullying is still so active in today`s society. However, I believe it is even worse with social media being so available. When I was going through my bullying experience, I could at least find peace and security at my home after school and on weekends. Now, social media allows a person to be bullied twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. My story tells how I was able to get through this horrible experience.

A movie producer picked up my story and together we produced the movie. Because we had the opportunity to have an up and coming young female star play the lead role, I changed the main character to be female instead of male. The movie is filmed on my farm, at my high school and in my town where the actual bullying occurred so many years ago. We entered it in film festivals around the country and it was received very positively, winning many prestigious awards.

Mayor Pinkie Grapefruit smiled slightly, "Well . . . well . . . well . . . look who we have here. Nathaniel Joseph Parker! I don't really care what you think Nathaniel Joseph Parker, and, yes, we know your name. You are one of the biggest offenders of them all. You are ruining everything for us, but you won't be doing that much longer. You will be changing the way you think, whether you want to or not. We have very persuasive methods to change people's minds. We have decided to take over the world, and we will be number one in the kitchen, in restaurants, and, well, everywhere!"

Grapefruits rule!

Running through cities is a part of my exploration. As I run I see, interact, build images that I put together in my poetic interpretive responses, my poems. I write on the run with a pad I carry.

I recall my impressions as I finish. I recall moments as reminders pop up in my mind. As if to see in words my views of the world of people and structures around me. Hopefully others will relate to my words and receive something similar in vision and intensity as I experience.
